I am Associate Professor of Textile Design and Head of the Master’s level Major in Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design at Aalto University, Finland and a creative director and textile designer with extensive international experience in the textile industry and academia. The core of my expertise is in design-driven development and innovation of textiles and creative collection building. My expertese ranges from fibres to yarns, fabrics and finishes – the creative and technical knowledge of yarns, woven fabrics, jacquards, embroideries and prints ranging from velvets and heavy upholstery to sheers and specialised functional fabrics. I manage seasonal interior textile collections for the residential and contract markets, from research and initial concept through technical and creative development to final quality decisions and colour coordination.
NEW BOOK Interwoven – Exploring Materials and Structures
“Maarit’s mantra of textile thinking is in itself a revolutionary concept where ancestral wisdom on crafting cloth is exploited for innovative scenarios toward new ways of creating relevance across all domains. The strength of Salolainen is her generous and ebullient enthusiasm for sharing these pages with knowledgeable colleagues, faculty friends and talented students, making this book’s collaborative approach the new standard on learning how to formulate textiles from scratch.” – Lidewij Edelkoort
